Keep Your Teeth Healthy During Holiday Celebrations
We all enjoy indulging a bit during the holiday season… some extra sweets, a little too much ham, and a few cocktails. By all means, enjoy the holiday celebrations, but know there are a couple steps you can take to keep your oral health maintained. Especially after the past year, it is important to allow yourself to destress and relax. The holidays with family and friends is the perfect way to do that, but don’t let your teeth take the burden. Stay focused on your current routine and follow these other steps to keep your teeth healthy.
Keep floss on hand
You will definitely be enjoying some food and treats during this time of year that we don’t normally eat. Some of these include sweet caramels, cookies, and so much more. All of these things can lead to issues in your mouth if not removed. Keep floss on hand so that you can sneak away to a restroom if needed to eliminate any food stuck between your teeth.
Drink plenty of water
We all know that drinking water is important to our overall health. During the stress of preparing for the holiday season and then indulging in too much food can reduce your immune system and health. Be sure to drink plenty of water during this season to keep your body hydrated and produce more saliva to protect your teeth.
Grab the turkey
One holiday food that’s great for your teeth is turkey. It’s a great source of phosphorus and protein – both of which can help your body fight tooth decay and keep your teeth strong and healthy.
Buy a new toothbrush
The holidays are a perfect time to buy a new toothbrush, preferably before. All the additional foods and drink you will be having, it is important to stay on top of brushing your teeth. Continue to brush at least twice a day, but if you find yourself reaching for a couple extra cookies, or another glass of wine, it is important to brush shortly after.
Limit your alcohol intake
Of course the holidays are a time to get together and celebrate with cheer. Allow yourself to enjoy a drink or two, but limit over consumption. Most alcoholic beverages are high in sugar and red wines can stain teeth enamel. If you do have alcohol, drink a glass of water in between and brush your teeth shortly after.
Watch out for nuts
Many tasty treats during the holiday season include nuts. They can be hidden in cookies, pies and fudge. Use caution when eating any of these because nuts are a popular cause of tooth chipping or breaking. No one wants to have a dental emergency during the celebration.
Don’t use your teeth as a tool
It is very common during the holiday season to use your teeth to cut tape, help open a gift or beer bottle or snap wire. This can lead to some major dental issues and potentially hefty expenses after the celebration. Please keep your teeth to chew and nothing else.
